David Dunkelman operated a buttonhole machine at the age of thirteen. He was an energetic young man and the perpetual monotony of the work became intolerable to him. He opened a tiny store on Yonge Street in Toronto with an eleven foot frontage. It was a big gamble, but this enterprise evolved into the giant Tip Top Tailors. At the peak of its operations under David Dunkelman, Tip Top produced 12,000 made-to-measure suits a week. At that time, no clothing firm in the world had such a market penetration. Undoubtedly a key ingredient of his success was the personal business philosophy he adhered to rigidly: “Every customer is a gem.”
